What is Ph.D in Doctor of Philosophy all about?

PhD, short for Doctor of Philosophy, is a doctoral degree programme with a minimum duration of 3 years and a maximum duration of 6 years. However, the course duration may vary from one institute to the other and also depends on the candidate. In most countries, a Ph.D. is an academic or professional degree that qualifies the holder to teach their chosen subject at the university level or to work in a specialized position in their area of interest. This is because the program has an academic focus providing in-depth knowledge of the specific vertical adopted in the field through advanced theoretical and research-based studies.

To apply for the PhD course, one must hold a master’s degree in the chosen subject. PhD aspirants can pursue the degree in any stream, provided they have prior educational experience in that field. Earlier, aspirants could pursue the degree through distance mode, but, according to the 2017 circular issued by UGC (University Grant Commission), PhD programmes pursued through the distance learning mode would not be recognized anymore.

Better Funding: Doing your Ph.D. abroad could be considerably cheaper because of the various funding options available to students. Also, tuition fees at the doctorate level differ extensively around the globe. There are plenty of scholarships available for international students which will take care of most of the expenses incurred by the student.

Broad Network: By creating ties in a new county, extend your network. You will get to know individuals on a personal basis and make friends from all over the world. Doing a Ph.D. abroad will also benefit you if, after receiving your degree, you intend to work beyond your home country.

This will enhance your cultural awareness and remove the barriers that you had at the start or as you begin a research degree.

New Research Environment or Methods: While doing your PhD abroad, you’ll benefit from learning new techniques, lectures taken by expert faculties, being part of a unique research community that itself is international. Choosing what career to choose after your PhD isn’t always easy, especially when you are not sure if you want to work in academia. However, that doesn’t mean that there are not enough career opportunities that you can pursue after PhD – and a good chance it’ll increase your earning potential.

    Academia:

Academia has always been a favourite choice for students after completing their PhD studies. The job profile usually involves teaching, giving lectures, performing research, managing administration, representing the college on a few occasions, and attending seminars and guest lectures in a specific field.

    Consultant:

A few years back, most consulting firms only employed MBAs for various roles. But things have changed now and with the steady rise of technology in most of the sectors, there has been a significant increase in the number of PhDs being hired by these firms.

Due to their strong technical background, quantitative approach, and research skills, more preference is given to them along with a much higher salary.

    Government Sector:

If you want to serve the country, then there are plenty of opportunities in the government sector for PhD students. There are PhD jobs in Government Hospitals, Ministry Departments, Entrance Exam Committee, etc. The job of a PhD student will be to understand complex problems and help in making informed choices.
